Integrative Restoration — iRest — is a research-based guided meditation protocol developed from the ancient practice of yoga nidra. It teaches the nervous system how to move out of a chronic state of high alert and back toward rest, and it has been studied and used across the U.S. military and Veterans Affairs system.

What a session feels like

iRest is practiced lying down and fully clothed. A facilitator guides you through a sequence of steps — noticing the breath, the body, sensations, emotions, and thoughts — without needing to change or fix any of them. The goal is not to empty the mind, but to teach the body a felt sense of safety and ground it can return to.

For people living with hypervigilance, that experience of genuine, unforced rest can be unfamiliar. iRest builds it gradually and gives you a portable skill you can use long after the program ends.

Why it complements ART

Where ART reprocesses specific memories, iRest works on the baseline — the overall tone of the nervous system. Combining the two addresses both the acute triggers and the chronic background stress that so often accompany trauma, insomnia, and chronic pain.

Common questions

What is Integrative Restoration (iRest)?

iRest is a research-based guided meditation protocol developed from yoga nidra that teaches the nervous system to move out of chronic high alert and back toward rest. It is used across the U.S. military and Department of Veterans Affairs.

What happens in an iRest session?

You practice lying down and fully clothed while a facilitator guides you through noticing the breath, body, sensations, and emotions — without needing to change or fix anything. The goal is a felt sense of safety and calm you can return to.

No. No experience, flexibility, or belief system is required. iRest is secular and designed to be accessible to people who have never meditated.

iRest targets insomnia, chronic pain, anxiety, and trauma-related hyperarousal by retraining the nervous system's baseline stress response.
