Crystal River, Florida, in Citrus County — the Home of the Manatee
← All Service Areas

Known as the "Home of the Manatee," Crystal River is a small Gulf-side city built around crystal-clear springs where visitors can swim alongside gentle sea cows in their natural home.

From Railroad Town to Incorporated City

Crystal River grew up around Kings Bay, a cluster of springs that keeps the water at a steady 72 degrees year-round. The railroad reached the area in the late 1880s, and a nearby phosphate boom helped the young town take shape around the turn of the century.

Unlike some of its Citrus County neighbors, Crystal River is a fully incorporated city. It was incorporated on July 3, 1923, and marked its centennial in 2023. Today it remains a compact, walkable community centered on its waterfront and springs.

Home of the Manatee

Crystal River is one of the only places in the country where people can legally swim with manatees in the wild. Each winter, hundreds of manatees gather in the warm springs of Kings Bay, and guided tours help visitors share the water respectfully. The most famous spot is Three Sisters Springs, a cluster of clear vents within the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, open to the public and known for its striking blue water.

The National Wildlife Refuge, established largely to protect the manatees, helps keep these springs and their wildlife safe while still welcoming careful visitors.

Ancient Mounds and Modern Fun

History runs deep here, too. Crystal River Archaeological State Park preserves a group of Native American mounds used for burial and ceremony over roughly 1,600 years, making it one of the longest continuously occupied pre-Columbian sites in Florida. Visitors can walk the grounds, climb a temple mound, and learn about the people who lived along the river long before European contact.

Between paddling, snorkeling, fishing, and exploring the downtown shops and eateries, Crystal River packs a lot of natural beauty and history into a friendly, small-city setting.

Life on the Nature Coast

Crystal River anchors this stretch of Florida's Nature Coast, a region prized for its unspoiled shoreline, seagrass flats, and abundant wildlife rather than crowded beaches. That setting shapes daily life, with residents and visitors drawn to the water for kayaking, boating, and quiet mornings watching birds along the marshes.

The city hosts seasonal festivals and manatee-themed events that celebrate its wildlife and springs, and its position along U.S. 19 makes it an easy gateway to the rest of Citrus County. It all adds up to a place where small-town warmth and world-class natural attractions sit side by side.
